After seeing so many people,
including film directors, showering praises on 1 Nenokkadine, I have
thought of getting answers to few questions that puts me back in calling this
film a marvel. Firstly, I admire the great director Sukumar, so that reflected in
my rating of 2.5/5 for 1 Nenokkadine. I couldn’t digest the fact that
‘Master story-teller’ and ‘Master of detail’ Sukumar has left few loose ends in
the film.
Few people told me that I was
generous in my rating and the movie only deserved a 1/5 or 1.5/5, and some said
how you can like a movie where the entertainment factor is zilch. I don’t want
to discuss about them as their definition of entertainment is definitely
flawed. My concern is those people who called film critics as useless and baseless.
Some even used extreme language and labeled us as ones who don’t understand the
nuances of cinema. I take that statement with a pinch of salt. If someone can suggest
a good course in 'film criticism' or 'review writing', I will enroll for it.
Here’s the link to my review
Alongside praising the film, I
wrote few lines bringing out the negatives of the film. As every review of
mine, I wanted to keep this spoiler-free, so didn’t want to get into the
details at the time of writing it.
My questions are as follows:
1) When the news of rockstar
Gautham (Mahesh Babu) broke on the TV, it has alerted Nasser living in London
but not Kelly Dorji in Goa. During the entire stretch of the first half, Kelly
(The industrialist) tries to kill Sameera (Kriti Sanon) but not Gautham. When
Nasser has a close aide and partner in crime staying in India, why would he and
his team try to contact Gautham. The same job could have been delegated to
Kelly.
2) Why Nasser needs to create a
set-up of some small company and carve wooden statuettes in Pune. I know this
is to shift the focus of audience from his character but isn’t it fooling them.
He is an industrialist and can stay in some hotel and oversee the operation.
Nasser coming to India is again baseless. If my first question is valid then it
can be done by Kelly himself.
3) In the yacht and fire episode,
what’s the need for parasailing? Gautham can take Sameera to the boat and I
don’t know how the parachute opened up after traveling such a small distance?
After they accidentally reach an island, Gautham finds Sameera’s camera lying
on the beach. Now don’t say that skimpily-clad Sameera brought it from the
yacht.
4) Kelly paints all his murders
as accidents. Then after a futile attempt to kill Sameera in Goa, why did he
plan to attack her in Hyderabad. He should have created an accident to kill
her. It’s shown that he also has a local gang in Hyderabad, so what’s the need
to send his henchmen all the way from Goa (they also kill a police officer at
the check post – why all this?). In the fight that follows, the goons get
multiple chances to kill Sameera but they wait for Gautham to hit them and
fight with them. That really suspended my disbelief. Hence, I wrote this in my
review “There are few staples that are typical of a Telugu film and some of
them gleam so much that you scratch your head in disbelief.” When you are
making a thriller that’s touted to be on par with Hollywood standards, please
stay with it and avoid force-fit commercial elements.
5) In the song London Babu,
Gautham is seen dancing with Sophia to get a key and opens a locker and sends
an SMS to Michael. Why? Anyways he would be coming there, right. The director
felt that the song is needed to drive some story. However, it’s unwarranted and
stands as a sore thumb.
6) In the pre-climax, Nasser says
he and Gautham’s father used to work as co-scientists in a company and later
parted their ways. However, in the climax, Gautham says his father was not a
biologist / farmer / scientist. Now isn’t it a contradiction?
7) The director piles another
layer of disbelief when he shows that streets of Belfast don’t change even after
20 years. And Gautham’s house still exists with his belongings.
8) In the interval bang, Gautham fires a bullet, which no one hears but the heroine. She reaches him and after confirming that he shot Kelly for real, he fires few more bullets. Surprisingly, no one, including Sameera's boss, hear these gun shots. Later, they take his body to a forest and throw it into a well. How did this happen without the notice of anyone?
8) In the interval bang, Gautham fires a bullet, which no one hears but the heroine. She reaches him and after confirming that he shot Kelly for real, he fires few more bullets. Surprisingly, no one, including Sameera's boss, hear these gun shots. Later, they take his body to a forest and throw it into a well. How did this happen without the notice of anyone?
9) Now coming to the famous
‘plant-and-payoff’ Rubik’s cube and its clues. It’s simple and understandable
that whenever Gautham finishes the cube he leaves four different color cubes in
the middle. Yes, his father knows this and writes the clue on it. This is
beyond the comprehension of the villain. But when Gautham looks at the cube in
a flashback-intercut-real-time-scene in the second half, he sees the storage
bank’s logo on one of its faces, which is a yellow square inside a green
square. The objective is to make him recognize the logo, then what’s the point
in showing his (dis)ability to arrange the cube right. Another million dollar
question – the pass code consists of 8 characters written on four faces of the cube.
How does Gautham know the correct sequence – clockwise or counter clockwise? In
the film, he is shown turning the cube counter clockwise. What if he does it
other way around?!
1 Nenokkadine is a valiant
attempt by Sukumar to blur the difference between mainstream cinema and art
house classics. However, some masala staples and unanswered questions made
it unpalatable. That’s not all. Few moments add a new leaf to ‘Suspension of
Disbelief’.
I am waiting for the answers..!!
@!,2 Nasser might be wanting the golden rice for himself, and so he followed gautham without kelly.
ReplyDelete@6. Gautham by saying "not a biologist/scientist" meant that....his father is a man with some goal to help farmers by giving some permanant solution and working to achieve it, and he actually doesnt mean that his father was not a scientist!!
Answer to 1 sounds valid but why was Kelly immune to all the news of Gautham killling him and other two. Along with Sameera, he should have also planned to kill Gautham.
DeleteAnswer to 6: That's understood. But what's the need to contradict Nasser's statement that he was a co-scientist with Gautham's father. Shall I take it as 'not true'.
1. Nasser sees Mahesh killing Pradeep ravath, but donno who Mahesh is until he knows the news.. He might have traced back to past with this info. But Nasser needs Mahesh to solve puzzle to get magic rice. So he himself comes as taxi driver to give them to him and at the same time to prevent Mahesh from killing him creating a soft corner. If Kelly Dorji's team would have tried to contact Mahesh it would have been a huge mess but at same time cannot prevent Mahesh from killing Nasser. Its a smart move from Nasser.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice explanation bro... Which means Nasser and Kelly are working together and the former might have asked to let it go, so as to handle it by himself. But Kelly would have sent some one to befriend Gautham and get to the secret. So many inferences can be drawn from this scene,
DeleteYou seem hell bent on nit picking all these trivial details, while there is a magnificently crafted larger arc being portrayed on screen. Is it your opinion that all of the Hollywood suspense thrillers have a super tight script and no gaping plot holes. Well, get a reality check 'duduuu'. The movie '1 Nenokkadine' is not just a suspense thriller in its entirety, it is an excellent showpiece at blending Indian Formulaic movie making and Hollywood style dramatic structure. Too bad that you have wasted your energies by dangling on to those silly details. Seems U really hate Mahesh Babu, not the kind of star who would simply settle for doing age old histrionics and churning out movies that takes believability for a ride.
Delete2. Nasser wants to show that he is a taxi driver.. Who used to carve wood as a hobby.. Who kept two wooden carved dolls at his parents' graves. Wood carving here is a needless to movie anyway.. but director tried to put it in movie and at the same time justified it
ReplyDelete3. Spare this. Camera is needed in next scene. No justification but its the tollywood's way of putting things in place. :)
Actually Pradeep Rawat places the wooden dolls near the grave of Gautham's parents. So their presence in both the flashback episodes (Nasser and Pradeep as driver) was justified. However, Nasser setting things up in Pune is too fool the audience. This is still not justified. Is it playing safe by not making Gautham suspicious or gain some sympathy from him?
Delete@Srikanth Shah
DeleteFor 3) Had close look when i saw for the second time. When Samira gets unconscious at the beach and at the couch, she is shown carring her bag. So obviously her bag also travlled along with her till island. Take a bow Sukumar! I see that Sukumar did not leave any loop hole for almost all the questions raised here !!

Thanks a ton Vamsi Suman.
DeleteU r the one who gave the most believable (close to logic) answers, though some of them fall in the zone of 'may be' or 'may be not'. Coming to the climax and whether it's shot in London or Belfast, it's Geography and nothing to do with film criticism. I might have missed a point there, but still how can you be so sure that Nasser is based in Belfast and not London. Nasser met Pradeep outside the concert and they traveled together. Is there any vital link that connects Nasser and his company to Belfast??!
Excellent replies Vamsi Suman
Delete@Raja Satish, If you see Trivias and FAQs for some english movies in IMDB, there will be few such may be or may be not answers for the loopholes. Reason, you cannot get the full book scenes into the movie. Further, Critics there does not end up giving 2.5 or 5* rating due to these loopholes but publicise such 1derful movies with 4 or 4.5* looking at the overall impact/unique concept. That is where our critics have failed. You are atleast ciritcal but few critics thrashed the movie just by seeing the audience response on benefit shows/1st day.
Another feedback for you...you said you missed the points as you have seen the movie amidst fans noises in the benefit show! You missed the points but quickly rated it as 2.5 without re-checking in normal shows!!
Critics and their reviews have defnitely spoiled the prospects of the movie. Agree or Disagree, telugus watch movies based on talk and critics reviews!! what are the consequences of 1 failure nd yevadu hit? A superb director like Deva Katta included an atrocious song on brahmanandam in a concept based movie - AutoNagar Surya..RIP TFI
Thanks Aryaman for all the lovely feedback.
Delete//looking at the overall impact/unique concept//
The concept is unique one in TFI and If we look at the overall impact, it's again debatable. Most of the people failed to grab the essence of the film, and some even lost the connect midway. To be an effective communicator / storyteller, I need to ensure that my message seeps into the minds of audience. So, here, though the director pushed the envelope to bring in a new form of entertainment, it was so heavy on a regular viewer. As you know, the film-makers had to explain the film's crux to audience in the press meets and other interviews, and chop 20 minutes from the film. Why they have to resort to such a thing. It is clear that there was a futile attempt to convey their point in one medium.
How much a critic influences a film's success??
Trade reports say that critics and their reviews influence a small share of a film's revenue. I may be right or wrong, but the influence is minimum. But in case of Bollywood, the reviews fall on both the ends of the spectrum. Some give it a 1, and some give it a 4. Most of the critics write-off certain movies, and they still cross the 100 crore mark.
I said I missed some point on Geography in the benefit show. About ANS and addition of an item song; that's bringing a formula in a non-formulaic ecosystem and a reflection of the status quo of TFI. You have plug in something to woo the masses.
@Raja Satish
DeleteAudience lost the connect midway!! Yes but not everyone, Critics should not. I lost the connect midway when i have seen Inception but critics there did not!! Yes Director pushed the envelope to bring new form of entertainment to a wrond audience who are used to Dookudu/AD/Racha templates. Unfortunately, Critics here also got used to it. I think that is the whole criticims of telugu critics. A 2nd half of Attarintiki Daredhi is accepted by all critics that its rediculous but ends up with 3-4.5* becuase AUDIENCE GOT CONNECTED!! I considered Lunchbox movie as boring but critics there did not go with the audience reaction! Yes Film-maker had to chop off and explain film`s crux in press meets as he made the movie for TELUGU AUDIENCE! Pity Sukumar, he would not have faced this wrath had this been in any other industry!
Please dont campare Tollywood reviews with Bollywood. The reviews thare does not effect on the overall revenue. Hindi has wide markets. Rediculous mvs with super bad talk with varying critics review ratings (Krish3 and Dhoom3) were top grossers there. They will not work in Telugu if they got same talk and same varying critics review ratings
Addition of item song/formula!! Are there any producers here who dare to make big budget non-formulaic mv with no mass trappings!

DeleteJust because @Vamsi Suman supported the movie and director, you dont have to pull out all the negative aspects and present it here, shows your cheap PSYCHO mentality!!
Yes isn`t it psycho behavior for people to go on first benefit show and then psychoticlaly try for the varadhi call to be the first caller and convey the negative points there to director? A normal person would end up calling rigourously to speak to his/her favorite director/actor to convey positive points and if possible, highlight some negative points to take care of.
Sukumar behaved that way irritated with the behavior of this ANTI FAN(s) and knows its not a genuine opinion! Someone even reported that there are 40-50 fake tiwtter ids created on day of #1Nenokkadine released giving same spam tweets about how bad the movie is(courtesy Anti Fans)
Kudos to Sukumar for acknowleging his mistake, about y he reponded that way and saying sorry to the caller later. Very few genuine prople have the habit of realizing their mistakes!!

DeleteI too gave low ratings to some Hindi movies - The Lunchbox - 2.5, Krrish 3 - 2, Ramleela - 2. Then people started labeling that Tollywood critics have no sensibilities to appreciate a Hindi film. I don't know how was that a justifiable statement. As a critic, we voice our opinion, irrespective of a Telugu, Hindi or English landscape. A film is a film and every film critic steps into shoes of an audience and then dons the hat of a critic. Some try to do a balancing act and some stay on extreme poles.
Few say that 1 - Nenokkadine is a right film in a wrong industry. But why? When we have accepted many art house classics that are away from formula, then why not 1??
This comment has been removed by the author.
Delete@Raja Satish
DeleteWell..if we put it other way, why only people have raised voice against critics ratings of 1 and why not other mvs which ended up with low ratings? Its pointless if we just ignore thinking that it is created by mahesh fans or makers. Many of my frends who are other hero fans, who absolutely hate mahesh and sukumar;just loved the movie and are surprised by the talk and critics ratings.
We are talking about telugu movie reviews and not hindi movies here. Art house classics? Name one done by a telugu big star in the recent 5-10 years! Clearly acceptance of 1 by critics, eventually public woudl ahve started new revolution in the way telugu scripts are today.
Critics say that it is their opinion and expect people to respect and accept it. Well, people also have given some opinion and critics now feel offended. Critics dont respect people`s opinion but expect people to accept their opinion.
People really got into opinion about telugu critics when they see excellent positive reviews coming in for 1 from other industries! Mark this space, you will see more such reviews pouring from other industries.
why are we raising our voice? The other industry critics first reaction is- we never dreamt we will watch a telugu movie and appreciate it but 1 did that. This is something very annoying that telugu critics have thrashed a golden and innovate attempt.
You ahve been so nitpicking holes to rate it low for 1 movie! You(many critics) never did it for Attarintiki Daredi. you never rated it low pointing out gravity defying stunts with Sun glasses, Station clearance, Pawan slipping off the character and asks his men even to kill people if they dont clear station, Amnesia on/off for heroine, Trivikram blantant inspirations from A thousand words, Assassins(Athdu)/Dark knigt(Julayi fight). Critics have hailed it with 4* but nitpicks loops in 1 to rate it low!! Show these template movies like AD, Dookudu, baadhsah, Racha to other industry people. They(mostly) will comment out saying telugu movies are rediculous.
Every one perfects working positivley on some aspects of criticism but unfortunately our (some) critics does not feel like taking feedback and circulate self ego boost articles pointing at peoples opinion! (GA article). what is the consequences of this?
1. Devakatta added rediculous song on brahmi for ANS
2. Mahesh back to Dookud/Pokiri/family entertainer templates
3. Sukumar will be back to his love stories
4. charan to yevadu/family entertainer templates
we request critics not put down our heroes/directors/makers saying they never try new . Critics always do that when they review very good kolly/bolly movies.
Please take feedback if you think its relevant. Else, please ignore and all the best!
Dude.. Your no 6 is absolutely ridiculous. Goutham says my father isn't a scientist/farmer or a biologist and then continues his speech saying his father's heart ached to see lotsa people suffer and this triggered him to be a scientist. Apparently you are not taking it according to the context. The use of such lines is sheer brilliance where you propose a negative statement and then contradict it by your logic. Read Antony's speech in Shakespeare's Julius Caeser to appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteDude... I am not saying anything against what Gautham said. That point is taken. Nasser and Gautham's father are colleagues in a firm. Then the latter moves out and starts cultivation of rice in a traditional way and for that Nasser says it's impossible. If he is already into something then why Gautham's father worked as a scientist. Why ridiculous?? What shall the audience think.
DeleteRaja satish ... you keep criticizing and writing blogs on the internet ... plz continue doing that ... because anyway you're not that creative to make a movie or write a story ... never in your life you stood behind a camera ... this is what you can do ... hmmm ...
ReplyDeleteHey Raja... I have not been so critical on the film. If you notice, in my review, I have showered praises on the film's FORM and TECHNIQUE. This post is to get clarity on few unanswered questions, at least for me, from the film. Many people are still confused about most of the parts of the film. May be I am trying to echo them. Above all, I couldn't stomach few loose ends coming from an able director. That's all.
DeleteNow, I am more than happy that I got answers to most of the questions. Well, coming to the point that whether I can make a movie or write a story. Isn't it probing too much into my personal space.
When Nasar narrates fake flashback to Mahesh ... he said that he want to settle in London as taxi driver and seeks help from pradeep rawat and also Pradeep Rawat and Kelly narrates that Nasar has accepted help from them ...then why he becomes taxi firm owner in India.
ReplyDeleteGautham should have got the doubt when he visited Nasser. But again, there was no concrete point to say that the taxi driver might have settled in London. May be after the killing of Gautham's parents, he might have not asked for their help.
DeletePradeep Rawat asks Nazar that he is looiking out to settle in Lodon and trying out for Visa. when nazar tells theat people asks life or money to not to disclose their secrets, he gives a wicked smile along with pradeep rawat saying "mari nuvvu, Vissa". So it makes sense taxi driver settled in london.
DeleteIt's a brave attempt by Sukumar. It's soo sad to digest that, so called critics are not appreciating brilliant screenplay and trying to pick silly loop holes to conclude this movie as disaster. For you critics, you like movies like Yevadu etc etc, go on....mana industry inka bagupadadu
ReplyDeleteSome of these questions are silly, seriously. If there is an ambiguity you can question, you are even questioning the way director showed some scenes on screen, that's his creativity. Why can't a parachute take off immediately? you are expecting the streets of a city to change in 20 years, come Hyderabad I will show hell lot of streets which haven't changed. And your logic on Rubik's cube is meaningless. You are trying to save face for your pathetic review. This movie has opened reviewers eyes, a welcome change. Anybody who opens a website has become a reviewer unfortunately and they are deciding the fate of the movie.
ReplyDeleteAs for #7. There are several towns in US (not sure about Europe) called "Ghost Towns" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_town) where places are intact for years. I myself visited few places but never been inside a house. But I believe the belongings whatever were left would've stayed.
ReplyDelete#9 is purely based on an algorithm for solving Rubik's cube (also called Rubik's revenge). Gautham when he was a kid infact doesnt finish solving the cube and leaves it at step 1 which is - solving for centers. (http://vwscreation.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-solve-4x4-cuberevenge_17.html)
ReplyDeleteIt maybe that the father was trying to teach him Rubik's revenge but he always stopped at step 1. This can only be precisely answered by Sukumar himself
#3, lol, is where me and my girlfriend looked at each other in disbelief for the same exact reason as you mentioned. But then again if you ask such questions I would aptly tell you - "Kallu potai alantivi adigavante, lempalesko"

Here are my answers to the critic.
ReplyDelete1) In the flashback, Nasser, being an NRI, took the help of Kelly Dorjee, a Goa local, to help him in finishing off Gautham's parents. Kelly didn't know the purpose of the kill, and didn't know what Gautham's father was upto. Moreover, Sukumar cleverly linked Kelly and Nasser's paths. The reason why Nasser, a seed scientist, contacted Kelly was that he was into the seed business (as established in the scene where Sameera reports about the HCN in the seeds produced by Kelly's firm)
2) Nasser came to know about Gautham and his past, when he spoke to Pradeep Rawat, after chasing him during his concert at Belfast, Ireland. But, Gautham remembers only the faces of the three persons, and nothing else about them. Hence, he recognized Rawat. Nasser observed this in Belfast. (Notice that he is based at Belfast, not London). So, he cleverly decided to trick Gautham into believing his made up story (using the vague details Gautham remembers) and got into the character of the cab driver who assisted the culprits, through which he wanted Gautham to solve the clue. Hence, Kelly at this point was nowhere related to Nasser or his activities in 2013 (real-time)
ReplyDelete3) The reason for the parasailing is very elementary. Sameera was unconscious and could'nt have held on to anything to prevent her from falling off the scooter, considering it was a very bumpy ride. If Mahesh tied her to his back, that would make it difficult for him to ride the scooter, and also limit his mobility, considering that there where shots being fired. This is a brilliant logic actually.
ReplyDelete4) The goons could've probably taken her somewhere, killed her and projected the murder as accident, as always with Kelly's victims. They were trying to take her away, and to avoid Gautham from attacking them, they put a knife on her throat. Out of all the countless Telugu movies, you chose to ignore 'suspension of disbelief' in this movie.
ReplyDelete5) I won't argue with this point, because basically, there is no scope for an item song in any movie, leave alone 1. The reason is contrived.
ReplyDelete6) In Gautham's monologue in the last scene, he says that his father wasn't all those things initially, but his zeal and passion made him a biologist and a farmer. It is not uncommon for someone to change his/her career path midway.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete7) Your question made me cringe. The whole climax was set in and around Belfast, Ireland. Pradeep Rawat's son brings Mahesh to the spot where his father, Rawat was killed. This place is Belfast, as established in my answer to question 2. For more clarity, the murder of Rawat was shown with a superscript which read 'Belfast, Northern Ireland'. As said in point 2, Nasser is based in Belfast too. His company is located there. So, the entire climax took place in Belfast.
ReplyDeleteAnd, also how could you assume a place which had a sea-shore (in the walkway wooden bridge shot) to be London? Considering that Belfast is a town and the house was secluded from the mainland, it's possible that the house remained unoccupied. And, Sukumar showed the difference in vegetation in the shot where 'Trees ki madhyalo road undi' line comes.
8) Gautham's father engraved that clue on the cube, because Gautham solved it in that pattern due to habit, not due to any disorder. And his was Integration Disorder, not dyslexia or something else, to make him unable solve the cube completely. It's out of his habit that the grown-up rockstar Gautham solves the cube in that pattern. Regarding the passcode thing, it wasn't an 8 character code. It had 9 characters. N3-PC-181-KZ. Since, you nitpicked this point, I'll offer a possible explanation. The passcode might be in some specific pattern, (like the characters 5-7 being always numeric). Or else, Gautham's dad might have added an extra clue for the order in which the passcode had to be read. This is a far-fetched explanation, I agree, but it's not completely illogical. As Sherlock said, 'Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth."
ReplyDeleteAll other points are fine, they are geniune doubts, but the question where you assumed that the climax was set in London sums up the state of the critics in TFI. I won't say anything else. It's clear who is doing a ' half-baked' job now. It's definitely not Sukumar!
Sorry, if I was rude, but it's my angst against all the critics, who couldn't understand the brilliance of this great movie which could've opened new frontiers in TFI, and trashed it left and right. Now, no '1' in TFI will dare to experiment on a huge budget again.
why michael will be killed in the movie? and who kills him...Nasser? can anyone please answer this.
