Sahasam - Plot holes galore!!

A great piece by Jayasimha that unleashes the plot holes and bloopers in the movie Sahasam.

Disclaimer:
--------------
This is not a review . With due respect to the unique director Chandrashekhar Yeleti, I don’t intend to question his directorial skills, this is a brief analysis of the plot holes in the movie - Saahasam. This content is meant for movie critics and reviewers. For an ordinary movie goer, the following content may look inappropriate. Please read the following after watching the movie :)
                                                                                                         - njayasimha@gmail.com

I am an ardent fan of treasure hunt theme and this excitement made me watch the trailer of Sahasam a repeated number of times to know “what could be the story of this movie?”. As a result I wrote the following article (published in one of my friends blog) about my guess on the story of the movie Sahasam:

I am glad that more than 90% of my prediction has come true but what has disappointed me in the movie is its drag in the narration and a numerous plot holes. These are some unanswered questions. Please feel free to reply if you got answers:

1. When the main character believes in “Naadi kaanidi naakoddu, Naadi annadi adogoddu”, why does he rely so much on luck (by buying lottery tickets)? You can claim that something is yours when you earn it by working hard. What comes by luck is not yours. When he was so excited dreaming of 10 lakhs as reward, then he can negotiate for huge money when the terrorist asks for the locket. The contrasting point here is, if he believes in that dialogue then he cannot aspire for lottery money. This dialogue is justified at the end though, because he takes many pains to earn his ancestor’s diamonds.

2. Gopichand’s father doesn’t know what his father was doing? He even quotes that his father had an old cycle. I agree that if he doesn’t know about diamonds but at least the profession of his father should have been known.

3. How the heck the old bag containing the diary and the papers related to Suman’s property was hidden in the old house in Hyderabad? Suman hadn’t visited this house. Even if you take it as granted that Suman came to the house and hidden it in the rooftop, why the hell, he doesn’t inform his son/any other relative directly that he has property in pakistan and his son is sole owner after him? From the diary, his intention was to make sure his property reaches his son then why to hide it in the roof?

4. Suman gives the locket but not the diary having info about treasure. C'mon!!

5. The artificiality factors -

a. Taapsee organizing a camp to invite people to visit temple in Pakistan.

b. Calling friends by seeing Yellow Pages (in the times of FB, Twitter, WhatsApp etc).
On top of that, she says "Neeku devudante ishtam kada anduke adugutunna" - Hilarious :D

c. Parents giving permission to a girl to go to Pakistan with a stranger to visit temple.

d. Only one person accepts to visit (though his intention was different). Director should have sent at least 3-4 people and by seeing the danger with terrorists, those people should have returned and Gopichand should have carried it forward.

e. Ali’s character was introduced as a head of a security agency, but his behavior was like a regular resident.

f. The Hinglaj Devi temple was shown deserted without any devotees or pujaris though it was told that it was a famous temple.

6. Suman narrates that he saw the secret entrance only once but the traps to treasure were laid during the Kanisha dynasty time. So, how does Suman solve the traps to enter the door present in the well? Suman crosses the bridge, cracks the ‘sound room’ mystery to enter the place - a pillar with swans - that leads to the repository of Kanishka's treasure. He does all this without an iota of knowledge about the hidden dangers and comes out effortlessly.

7. This plot point has a missing logic. To open the box having the map, you need the Garuda locket which acts as its key. It is shown that while searching for the box (having map), one Britisher, David, died inside the cave (with locket on him). But how did he enter the cave? He can enter only if he sees the map and does the 5 stage alignment of the round rock present inside Hinglaj Devi temple. This is a major blooper in the film.

8. Any treasure hunt movie should get into the business as soon as it creates a quick premise but here there is no intense moments till the last 30 minutes of the movie. At some time after the interval, it feels like its not a hunt for treasure but villains hunt for Gopichand to get the locket..!

9. When Ali narrates the rules of Buzkashi sport, Gopichand was lying unconscious. He doesn't know the rules of the game that the game is won if the dead lamb is kept in the circle. When he wakes up, he rides the horse (quick learner!) and then, in an utmost heroic way, he puts Taapsee in the circle and says its your rules. He is not only quick learner but also good listener in unconscious state of mind..!

10. I didn't understand why did the director/story writers create the shortcut pipeline (that gets opened when appropriate weight was kept on swans) to the main treasure room? The main entrance to the treasure is just one room behind..! They show lot of machinery cranking when swans move. If the answer is to send all the things then how did a big golden statue went through that shortcut pipeline? If the answer is to send only small jewellery then why to maintain so much machinery when the main entrance is just behind it. OK..got it..Kanishka might be lazy enough to open the main locker every time to keep small jewellery? :)

On an ending note, I highly appreciate Chandrasekhar Yeleti for attempting this genre and the last 30 minutes in the movie proves his real talent. The writers of this movie deserve a special mention for sketching the traps and the way to solve them. This appreciation is again for last 30 minutes only...:)

  1. watch is second time dude..it is easy to pull plot holes sitting for 2 hours but the genious yeleti sir spent nealry 2 years on the subject. Some of the plot holes you raised are answered here(corresponding to your plothole number)

    1. Hero yells at one point to his parents that he was not given any property, education to lead happy n prosporous life. He believes in “Naadi kaanidi naakoddu, Naadi annadi adogoddu”. Relying on lottery tickets is the typical mentality of poor guys to earn quick fortune. How r you missing the logic that one who buys the lottery ticket will get the fortune that the ticket brings?? If the lottery ticket is bought by someone else, he will not yearn for the fortune it brings :):)

    2. Its common not to know what fore fathers do.. I don`t know what my thatha, mutthatha professions were. Gopi`s father also told that the thaatha died at his young age.

3.Obviously Suman escaped from Pakistan and it is onvious that he moved to an indian city. He might not have informed any of her children as it is only a diary and he does not know any routes for the treasure and it tells that he lost the route in the cave and lost the diamonds. It is jsut one of the incidents in his diary and not intended to pass it to his children to hunt that.
More over, looking at the condition of Pakistan and partition problems, he might have felt safe that his children does not go there:):)

    4. Suman does not know antying about the route. He was lost in the cave, lost the diamonds, found a locket , escaped somehow. Note that reaching to the treasure through the map is not the only way to reach the treasure. Scientist`s daughter also reached to treasure (without following any route map) even after falling in the water......CONTD.

    1. Hi Aryaman, First of all, thanks for expressing your views in detail and I admire you for replying to most of the points. Please see my comments inline:

      1. The only point I raised here is: the character's philosophy was inconsistent. When he relied on lottery tickets, the offer from the fake researcher to ask any amount in trade for locket, would have been grabbed by him. If he is believing so much on that dialogue then lottery tickets should not have been showed. If we take the logic further seriously, according to the will,Suman clearly mentions all his property belongs to his immediate successor first(i.e his son)!!

      2. Its not a question of thatha and muthatha. Its about Gopichand's father knowing about his own father.

      3. Then why to retain the will papers and diary. If he was so much worried about the safety of his children, he should have destroyed. His intention was to pass his wealth to his children.

      4. For this point,as you suggested there is no need to watch the movie for second time. If you recollect properly, Suman opens the same door that Gopi opens from the well. CONTD..

    2. 1. Hahaha...Sorry to say but very bad Analysis. His fathers also would become his property right!! you were just expecting too much picture perfectish and might have entered the theatre only to rip apart the movie. I dont find a reason whya guy who relies on lottery tickets and believes tht famous dialogue should accept the offer from fake researcher. HIS diamonds will always be more worthy than the offer!!

see my below comments whihc is even more clear n updated for point 2/3/4

  2. 5. The artificiality factors -

    a. That`s tapsee personal interests and profession. dont find any reason not to believe it

    b. Calling friends by seeing Yellow Pages (in the times of FB, Twitter, WhatsApp etc).On top of that, she says "Neeku devudante ishtam kada anduke adugutunna" - Hilarious :D

Yes, a bad way of communication in these days. But, She might not be a tech savvy.
My cousin- very well educated and not a tech savvy, does not know how to use FB,Twitter and watsapp...:):)

    c. Parents are very liberal these days to encourage what children wants..So believable

    d. It is absolutely believable that none of the devotees show interest to go to Pakistan. Done believe it, ask yourself to 10 people around you if they are interested to come to Pakistan for a piligrimage

    e. Ali`s character is almost like US settled guys who tells that they are settled in US with a good job, but they actually hide the fact they work in stores, petrol bunks etc.,.

    f. Check this wiki about Hinglaj. This is the bad state of temples in Pakistan. They are not maintained and not inhibited. Of only 1.6% hindu population overall in pakistan, you cannot expect the temple to be inhibited always. In the references link, it tells that most of the lower class hindus do piligrimage to the temple during April

    CONTD.....

    1. The points you mentioned in c) and d) are contradicting. You claim that out of 10,none of them would be interested to go to Pakistan. Do you think that Tapsee falls as 11th person?

      e) I agree, his character was to provide some comic relief.Instead of portraying as a security officer with out conviction, they could have sent as a pilgrim along with Gopi.

      f) This is exactly my point. If you recollect, Taapsee says "why is this temple in this stage? why is no one taking care?". This means even Taapsee who has planned a trip by motivating people to this temple doesn't have a basic piece of info on how the state of temple would be.This is completely unplanned.Imagine if more people would have gone with her and then they question, why did u bring us here when you yourself doesn't know the conditions here!!
      CONTD...

    2. seem my below comments whihc is even more clear n updated for c) and f). Did not get why you are counting 11th person as Tapsee as it is her personal interest/profession?

      e) one of my friend also suggested Ali should have accompanied gopi, tapsee into the treasure hunt fr comic relief. But this is director`s school of thought to ahve him as a security officer.

      f) Yes she is protrayed a very innocent who even takes dairy milk as prasadam if someone says it so.

  3. 6/7.
Again David and Suman does not know about the route/map. Just that they are lost/wandered in the cave and reached to the stage where they were shown in the mv..There is not only one way (through map) to go inside the cave but only way to treasure is through the map. If you are aware of cave dwelling, there would be many ways to reach a place. just that kanishkas prepared easy entrance through map and kept it sacred through map.

  4. 8 yes its a telugu movie and has to succeed in TFI market and not in US market. These kind of story buildup required to make the movie succeed even in B/C centres which eventually get movie a hit status. Overseas and NA centres hit does not really fetch a hit status for telugu movie

9 2 ways - Either he might just be getting conscious and he listened wat ali told. Directors does not show this so that the tense will be built up for the scene else it will not give a thrilling exp.

Or he might have got into the play and learnt about the play while others play. i learnt cricket while playing wiht others in my child hood days with zero knowledge of the game..:):)

    1. 8. I agree to create that build up but it should not test the audience for 1hr 40mins.

      9. I think we cannot assume things in this case. The frames clearly shows that he was lying unconscious till they capture Taapse. And coming to knowing part, basically Buzkashi sport is played in Afganistan and if you insist that a security guard would know this sport or he would have learnt while others were playing in Hyderabad, well, OK fine :) !!

    2. seem my below comments whihc is even more clear n updated for point 9. Also Is a security guard brave enough to follow the goons/jump across the walls n catch the ATM money thieves. No, But Gopi is. So he learnt while others were playing at the same spot..:)
Anyway this is very absurd /contradictory discussion when there is a valid reason as i have mentioned in the belwo comment

  5. some corrections/updates- watched it for second time to confirm:-)

    2. Gopis father tells that his father and mother died at his young age and it is believable his father does not know his fathers actual profession.

    3. realized when i watched for second time, it is not diary. Suman clearly writes will and incidents happend so that his children inherit them if found. As Gopi`s father told suman died at his very young age. It is obvious he would hvae thought to inform when the children grows up. He would have written the will/incidents when knowing he cannot live for longer and children are very young to know about the will.

    4. As we were shown, the diary is mostly burnt up and Gopi will not be able to read all the pages as they are burnt up. Suman tells he entred the cave. He might have either written about the route to reach the cave and the pages burnt up(or) he does not remember the route as he was going there very randomly ( there is a dialogue that he was lost and he don`t know how he escaped from there )

5.b. Finding correct school friends in FB is really tedious and cannot guarantee you can reach a lost friend. Finding yellow pages when we know the area and full name of the person/fathers name is a guaranteed success effort :)

5.c Missed this point. Father alerts tapsee about going pakistan with stranger. He even arranges some family friend over there(some basheer) and tells Ali will safely taker her wherever she would like to go.

5.f. Another point missed by me. It is not the actual Hinglaj temple that i have shown in wiki. It is one of the temples in peshawar which has Hinglaj mata ( just lyk we have many ramalyams in hyderabad). An old man over there tells to Gopi that the temple is closed for almost many years.

    6. Suman solve the traps to enter the door present in the well? Yes but the pages in the diary are half burnt. He might have written how to enter there.
Pillar with swans can be reached even before sound room mystery and wihtout reaching the actual treasure place. It has passage to store money into the treasure room. Kanishkas have designed such that you can send the diamons through opening without always reaching to the treausre room. Suman would ahve never reached the treaure place.

For a second if we think this is not true and say Suman would have crakced everything. He might have written in the book but the pages are burnt. So its a highly believable one. He fells into the cockpit and says he says "ela brathiki bayata paddano naake teliyadu" .

    7. Thre is obvious another diffult route reaching to the cave without looking into the route and 5 atage alignment. This is strong reason why Suman and David reach to the stage where they were seen in the cave.

    9. Though Ali narrates the play with the deer skin, Gopi is shown getting conscious once Ali gets down. It is the locals who tell again they will play with tapsee and whoever gets her into the rounded place, they will get the girl. After winning, Gopi tells "nuvve annav kada, ikkada evaraithe ammai ni testhe vallaki ammai sontham ani" -:)

  7. Friends... you guys forgot to observe one major point in the movie that is Diamonds were fallen into the swan which are almost or perfectly equal to the required weight with which the Door to cave gets opened. these diamonds are locked up in the swan and the same was found by the archeologist/ scientist and same was forcibly taken away by Shakti kapoor before killing him. It is shown by the Director that at the end of the movie Gopi chand finds the same diamonds again in the cave along with the same leather bag. which is big dig and pot hole of the movie. how these diamonds entered the cave when the same were locked up in the swan and that was already (forcibly) taken away by the VILLAN Shakti kapoor before killing the scientist? please watch and give your comments. Subrahmanyam PVRC
