Theme song – Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (Telugu) – A lyrical wonder!!

In the barren land of Telugu lyrics infested with Kevvu Kekas and Kolaveri Dis, here’s a fresh breath of life in the form of Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. Trivikram rightly said “Sirivennela gaaru prekshakula sthaayini penche rachayitha.” Now, this is a National award winning song written by him. I never went into such detail in understanding Dasaavataaras, Ashta Siddhis before listening to this song.

Evaru raayagalaru ilaanti paata. Evaru oohichagalaru tana cinemalo pettaalani ilaanti paata.

Thanks Sirivennela Seetaramasastry, S P Balu, Mani Sharma and Krissh for giving this wonderful gem.
The text in italics is the song lyrics and that follows is an explanation/meaning.

  4. Thanks for the excellent description. Just as a continuation to this can you also post the ninth and 10th avatara in Dasa Avatharas? Is Buddha an avatara of lord Vishnu..? If yes, why is it different from Hinduism. If no, then is it Balarama as the eighth and Krishna as the 9th so that Kalki avataram is the 10th one? Please enlighten us with your research. Thanks!

    1. Thanks Srikanth. Good to know that you liked the post.

"Balarama" is worshiped in southern regions of India as the eight avatar, with "Krishna" as ninth, in distinction to north India, where "Krishna" is worshiped as eighth and "Balarama" is not included as an avatar. "Balarama" appeared in the Dwapara Yuga, along with "Krishna," as incarnation of Ananta Shesha (who was Lakshmana in Threta Yuga). If Dasaavataras are reincarnations of Sri Maha Vishnu, then logically "Balarama" cant feature in this list.

Surprisingly, Srimadbhagavatam mentions "Balarama" as 8th, "Buddha" as 9th, and there's no mention of Krishna. http://www.srimadbhagavatam.org/music/text/dasavatara.html

In Vishishtadvaita, "Balarama" is the eighth avatar of Vishnu, while Krishna is the ninth. "Buddha" does not find a mention here. Buddha is considered as an avatar of Vishnu in Dvaita, Smartha and Advaita traditions.

In Orissa, "Jagannath" is sometimes depicted as the ninth avatar instead of "Buddha." Jayadeva, a great Vaishnava saint and renowned poet of 12th century from Orissa, included Buddha as the ninth avatar in the famous song Gita Govinda.

For your question - If "Buddha" is an avatar of Sri Maha Vishnu then why is is different from Hinduism?? To understand that we need to establish a connect between Hinduism and other traditions such as Dvaita and Advaita. And I am a lesser mortal to fathom the depths of religion so I will leave it for savants to answer.

  5. Thanks for the detailed explanation..so can we conclude that we do not have authentic information about the 8th and 9th avataras? Also in the last para of your reply you mentioned that "we need to establish connect between Hinduism and other traditions such as Dvaita and Advaita"...am confused with this statement...as they are siddhantas followed by different people under Hinduism itself and they are not separate from Hinduism to connect them. AdiSankaracharya propogated Advaita (oneness) as established in the vedas and few others like Madwacharya believed in Dwaitha (Atma different from Paramatma - So two)...so to understand Buddhism's connection to Hinduism how can we use these two siddhantas? I know am deviating from the main subject of this blog...but am sure research scholars like you can definitely help me in understanding this in a better way so that I can understand the basis of dasavathara. Thanks very much!

    1. Hi Vamsy

Sorry for the late reply. You might have observed in the previous comments, there is an ambiguity with the other two avataaras which are not part of Sirivennela Seetaramasasthry's description in the song. So, may be, to avoid confusion they might have not included them. Acoording to various sources, the other two avataaras are Buddha or Balarama or Kalki. I hope that answers your question :)

  11. Superb movie and ultimate song!!! Really don`t why it was not cherished to its worth by our folks...Thank you Raja Satish for the meaning...

This song just gives the gist of all religions:

    Neeloni ashtasiddhulu neeku tanbattagaa

    Swaswaroopame viswaroopammuga

One who can integrate all his ashta siddhis into a common goal(for a noble cause for the good of all) is none other than GOD.
    "SWASWAROOPAME VISWAROOPAM"

  12. http://www.bvml.org/SBBTM/mbavabad.html and some other experts say that the ancient avatara-Buddha and the modern Gautama Buddha are not the same person.

The Vedas encode instructions according to the eligibility or qualification of various living beings, especially human beings. But in the course of time, ignorant men took the tamasika[1] orders to be the only instruction of the Vedas[2] and engaged in the extensive killing of animals, sometimes even sacrificing human beings during worship of the demigods. At that time, the Supreme Lord descended in the form of Buddha(Sakyasimha Budha) and outwardly rejected the teachings of the Vedas for the welfare of human beings incapable of comprehending the true teachings of the Vedas. This implies that He disputed and cancelled His own prior teachings, propounded the futility of belief in God and preached to human beings four noble truths, to free them from their violent practices. This act of Buddha provided instantaneous benediction to mankind of that period. Later Lord Siva appeared as Sankaracarya. He re-established the supreme authenticity and decorum of the Vedas. This is about Lord Krishna`s avatara as Budha.

Sugata Buddha(Gautam Budha) and Sakyasimha Buddha(Krishnavatara) are not the same person.Gautama Buddha performed penances at the same place(Kikata Pradesa :the province of Gaya-Bihar) as the previous Buddha (Vishnu-avatara Buddha). Maybe it is for this reason that in later ages he and Lord Buddha are considered as being one:

The Buddha avatar of Vishnu is not spoken-of regularly in Hinduism just because it is against the Vedas. And the Kalki avatar is expected to come after kali yuga after we all get extinct. So we donot know about it. May be this is the reasen we don`t speak about kalki.

This is the reason we see only 8 avatars here in this song. Even Annamayya kritis speak about only 8 avatars in the song "ANDARIKI ABHAYAMMULU ICHU CHEYI"
